Camping in Guatemala isn\u2019t difficult \u2014 but it\u2019s not always obvious.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of official campgrounds, and more than enough places to stay if you know where to look. But they\u2019re not always clearly marked or easy to find just by driving around.<\/p>\n

A big part of camping here happens on private land \u2014 fincas, small eco lodges, or places where you simply ask if you can stay. Most of the time, that works. People are used to it, especially in more rural areas, and are generally open and helpful.<\/p>\n

What you won\u2019t find as often are random open spots where you can just pull over and set up without thinking. Unless you want to spend the night at a gas station, it usually takes a bit more awareness.<\/p>\n

Finding a place to stay<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In many places, especially outside of towns, asking locally works just as well as relying on apps alone.<\/p>\n

People will often point you to a place, or offer an option you wouldn\u2019t have found otherwise.<\/p>\n

If you stay on someone\u2019s land, it\u2019s common to offer something in return. Around 20\u201350 quetzales is typical, depending on the situation.<\/p>\n

Official campgrounds are usually more structured, with prices ranging roughly from 50 to 150 quetzales, depending on how established or touristy the place is.<\/p>\n

Timing also matters.<\/p>\n

A good rule is to arrive no later than around 3 pm. That gives you enough time to set up, adjust if the place doesn\u2019t feel right, or look for alternatives.<\/p>\n

It gets dark quickly in Central America. The transition from daylight to full darkness can take less than 30 minutes \u2014 and once it\u2019s dark, everything becomes harder.<\/p>\n

Once it gets dark, you\u2019ll want a headlamp. Light drops fast \u2014 and you\u2019re in the jungle. Things crawl.<\/p>

Insects and animals come out at night. A small campfire helps. Burn dry cow dung to keep them away.<\/p>

Don\u2019t leave your shoes outside. Something will move in. Always check before you put them on.<\/p>

If you sit around a fire, keep your feet off the ground. Ants find you faster than you think.<\/p>

Bugspray helps \u2014 better on clothes than skin.<\/p>

If you don\u2019t like itchy ankles, tuck your pants into your socks in the evening. You\u2019ll understand why.<\/p>

There\u2019s no real tap water. Always buy drinking water.<\/p>
